Names of Allah

Al-Akhir

Al-Ākhir

الآخر

The Last — whose existence remains after all things perish, having no end.

What does Al-Akhir mean?

Al-Akhir is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Last". It affirms that Allah is everlasting and without end — He remains after all creation perishes, eternally and absolutely, after whom there is nothing. Just as nothing preceded Him (Al-Awwal), nothing will outlast Him (Al-Akhir).

The Meaning in Depth

The Prophet ﷺ explained: "You are Al-Akhir, so there is nothing after You" (Muslim 2713). Everything other than Allah will perish: "Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour" (55:26-27). Al-Akhir is the everlasting refuge to whom all return and who remains when all else is gone.

Al-Akhir in the Quran

  • "He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is Knowing of all things." (57:3)
  • "Everything will perish except His Face." (28:88)

Living by This Name

Al-Akhir reorients the believer's heart away from the perishing world toward the Everlasting. Since all else ends, attachment is placed in the One who never ends. It brings perspective on loss and death: every parting in this life is temporary, but the believer's relationship with Al-Akhir endures forever. It encourages investing in what lasts — deeds for the eternal life with the Last.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Al-Awwal and Al-Akhir relate?

They are a complementary pair, both in the same verse (57:3): Al-Awwal affirms no beginning, Al-Akhir affirms no end. Together they declare Allah's eternity from both directions — He encompasses all of time without being bound by it.

What does "everything will perish except His Face" mean?

It means all creation is temporary and will come to an end, while Allah, Al-Akhir, remains eternally. "His Face" refers to His own everlasting reality. It reminds the believer to attach the heart to the One who endures.

Etymology & origin

Al-Akhir (الآخر) means "the Last", from the root A-KH-R (أ-خ-ر), related to lateness and what comes after. As a name of Allah it means the One who remains after all else ceases — the eternal, who has no end, after whom there is nothing. It is the perfect counterpart to Al-Awwal (the First).
