Names of Allah
Al-Hafiz
Al-Ḥafīẓ
The Preserver — who protects and preserves all of creation, recording every deed.
What does Al-Hafiz mean?
Al-Hafiz is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Preserver," "The All-Watchful Guardian". It expresses that Allah preserves and protects all that exists, watches over His creation without tiring, guards His servants from harm by His will, and records and preserves every deed, word, and intention — nothing is lost or forgotten with Him.
The Meaning in Depth
The hifz of Al-Hafiz works on several levels: He preserves the order of the heavens and earth so they do not collapse; He guards His servants, sending angels who protect them by His command; He preserves His revelation, having promised to guard the Quran from corruption; and He preserves every deed in a perfect record for the Day of Judgement. Whatever is committed to His keeping is never lost.
Al-Hafiz in the Quran
- "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its Guardian." (15:9)
- "...So Allah is the best Guardian, and He is the most Merciful of the merciful." (12:64)
- "...and over you are keepers (hafizin), noble recorders." (82:10-11)
Living by This Name
Al-Hafiz brings the believer security: God is watching over and protecting in ways unseen. The Prophet ﷺ taught the key to this protection: "Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you (yahfazka)" (Tirmidhi 2516) — meaning that whoever guards the limits of Allah and His commands will find Allah guarding them in turn. The believer also strives to "preserve" their own trust: guarding the prayers, the tongue, the eyes, and the covenants — for Allah loves those who are watchful (hafizun) over what He has entrusted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Al-Hafiz protect believers?
By His will He guards them from unseen harms, assigns angels to protect them, and preserves their faith and deeds. The Prophet ﷺ taught that mindfulness of Allah's commands is the path to His protection: "Guard Allah, and He will guard you."
How is Al-Hafiz related to the preservation of the Quran?
Allah promised in the Quran (15:9) to be its Guardian, and history bears witness: the Quran has been preserved unchanged in wording for over fourteen centuries, memorised by millions — a direct manifestation of His name Al-Hafiz.
Etymology & origin
Al-Hafiz (الحفيظ) is from the root Ḥ-F-Ẓ (ح-ف-ظ), meaning "to preserve, protect, guard, and keep watch over". From it come hifz (memorisation, safekeeping) and hafiz (one who guards or memorises, as a hafiz of the Quran). Al-Hafiz is the Preserver who guards all creation, protects His servants, and keeps a perfect record of every deed.
