Names of Allah

Al-Mughni

Al-Mughnī

المغني

The Enricher — who enriches whom He wills with material or spiritual wealth.

What does Al-Mughni mean?

Al-Mughni is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Enricher". It affirms that Allah is the One who enriches His creation — granting wealth, sufficiency, and, most importantly, the true richness of a contented heart. While Al-Ghaniyy means He Himself is free of all need, Al-Mughni means He makes others rich and free of need. All enrichment, outward and inward, comes from Him alone.

The Meaning in Depth

The enrichment of Al-Mughni is of two kinds: outward, in providing wealth and the means of life; and inward, the far greater richness of a heart content with Allah, needing nothing besides Him. The Prophet ﷺ taught that "richness is not in having many possessions, but richness is the richness of the soul" (Bukhari 6446) — and this contentment is itself a gift from Al-Mughni. He enriched the poor Prophet ﷺ, and He can lift any servant from need to sufficiency.

Al-Mughni in the Quran (related meaning)

  • "And that it is He who enriches (aghna) and grants possession." (53:48)
  • "And He found you poor and made you self-sufficient (fa-aghna)." (93:8)

Living by This Name

Al-Mughni redirects the believer's pursuit of wealth to its true source and its truest form. Rather than chasing riches through anxiety and greed, the believer asks the Enricher for lawful provision and, above all, for the richness of a content heart. It frees one from servitude to wealth and from envy of others, knowing that real and lasting enrichment is a gift only Al-Mughni can give.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Al-Ghaniyy and Al-Mughni?

Al-Ghaniyy means Allah is, in Himself, utterly free of all need — the absolutely Rich. Al-Mughni means He enriches others, making them sufficient and free of need. One describes His own self-sufficiency; the other, His act of enriching creation.

What is the greatest form of richness from Al-Mughni?

The richness of the soul — a heart content with Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said true richness is not abundance of possessions but contentment of the heart (Bukhari 6446). This inner sufficiency is the most precious gift of Al-Mughni, available even to one of modest means.

Etymology & origin

Al-Mughni (المغني) is from the root GH-N-Y (غ-ن-ي), the same root as Al-Ghaniyy (the Self-Sufficient) and ghina (richness). In its causative form (aghna), it means "to enrich, to make free of need, to satisfy". Al-Mughni is the Enricher: the One who enriches whom He wills, granting sufficiency, contentment, and freedom from need.
