Names of Allah

Al-Qahhar

Al-Qahhār

القهار

The Dominant, the Subduer — supreme over all creation, whose will overcomes everything.

What does Al-Qahhar mean?

Al-Qahhar is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Subduer," "The Ever-Dominant". It affirms that Allah has absolute, irresistible dominance over all of creation. Every power bows before His power; nothing and no one can withstand or escape His will. He subdues the proud, brings low the tyrants, and rules over all by sheer might.

The Meaning in Depth

Al-Qahhar reveals the side of God's majesty before which all creation is rendered powerless. Death itself, which subdues every living thing, is subdued by Him; on the Day of Judgement He alone will hold all dominion, asking: "To whom belongs the sovereignty this Day? To Allah, the One, the Prevailing (Al-Qahhar)" (40:16). His domination is always joined to His justice and wisdom, never cruelty.

Al-Qahhar in the Quran

  • "...and He is the One, the Prevailing (Al-Wahid al-Qahhar)." (13:16)
  • "To whom belongs the sovereignty this Day? To Allah, the One, the Prevailing." (40:16)
  • "Say: I am only a warner, and there is no deity except Allah, the One, the Prevailing." (38:65)

Living by This Name

Al-Qahhar instils awe of God and frees the heart from fear of any created power — for all power is subdued before His. It humbles arrogance, since the proud will be brought low by the Subduer. And it gives the oppressed hope: no tyrant, however mighty, is beyond the dominance of Al-Qahhar, who will bring every wrong to account. The believer subdues their own base desires (nafs) by His help, reflecting this name inwardly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Al-Qahhar a name of harshness?

No. It denotes irresistible dominance and supremacy, always joined to perfect justice and wisdom. It is a source of awe and hope — awe of His might, and hope that no oppressor escapes Him — not a description of cruelty.

How is Al-Qahhar often paired in the Quran?

It is repeatedly paired with Al-Wahid (the One): "the One, the Prevailing." This unites God's absolute oneness with His absolute dominance — He alone holds all power, with no partner and no rival.

Etymology & origin

Al-Qahhar (القهار) is from the root Q-H-R (ق-ه-ر), meaning "to overpower, subdue, dominate". The intensive form Qahhar denotes the One who utterly and irresistibly subdues all things — under whose dominion every creature is humbled, and whose power overcomes all power.
