Names of Allah
Al-Qayyum
Al-Qayyūm
The Self-Subsisting — who exists by Himself and sustains all of existence.
What does Al-Qayyum mean?
Al-Qayyum is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Self-Subsisting," "The Sustainer of All". It carries two linked meanings: Allah exists eternally by Himself, needing nothing to sustain Him; and He is the one who maintains, upholds, and sustains the existence of everything else at every instant. Without His sustaining, all creation would cease.
The Meaning in Depth
Everything in creation is dependent — needing food, energy, support, and a maintainer. Al-Qayyum needs none of this: He is the absolutely independent One, and at the same time the one upon whom all things depend for their continued existence. This name is twice paired in the Quran with Al-Hayy: the Ever-Living who is also the Self-Subsisting Sustainer, neither overtaken by drowsiness nor sleep.
Al-Qayyum in the Quran
- "Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence (Al-Hayy al-Qayyum)." (2:255 — Ayat al-Kursi)
- "And faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting." (20:111)
- "Alif Lam Mim. Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting." (3:1-2)
Living by This Name
Al-Qayyum teaches the believer total dependence on God: every breath, heartbeat, and moment of existence is upheld by Him. This dissolves false self-reliance and roots the heart in Him alone. The Prophet ﷺ would call upon Allah in times of distress with: "Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, by Your mercy I seek relief" (Tirmidhi 3524) — turning to the Self-Subsisting in every need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum mentioned together?
Because they complete each other: Al-Hayy is perfect, eternal life; Al-Qayyum is self-subsistence and the sustaining of all else. Together they affirm that God lives by Himself and gives all things their continued existence. Scholars consider this pairing among the greatest of the divine names.
How does Al-Qayyum help in hardship?
It reminds the believer that the One who sustains the entire universe sustains them too, moment by moment. Calling on Ya Qayyum in difficulty is turning to the One who upholds all and can set any affair right.
Etymology & origin
Al-Qayyum (القيوم) is from the root Q-W-M (ق-و-م), meaning "to stand, to establish, to maintain". It is an intensive form conveying the One who is eternally self-subsisting — standing in need of nothing — and who sustains and maintains all else in existence. It is famously paired with Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living) in Ayat al-Kursi.
