Dua After Adhan (Post-Azan Supplication)

Allāhumma rabba hādhihi'd-daʿwati't-tāmma

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ

The supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ to be recited after hearing the Adhan (Azan), asking Allah to grant Muhammad ﷺ the wasilah (highest station in Paradise) and the promised praiseworthy rank. Whoever recites it earns the Prophet's intercession on the Day of Judgement.

What is the Dua After Adhan?

The dua after the Adhan (Azan) is a short but powerful supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his community to recite immediately after the caller (muezzin) finishes the call to prayer. It asks Allah to grant the Prophet ﷺ two great honours — al-wasilah (a unique station in Paradise) and al-fadhilah (a rank of virtue) — and to raise him to the maqam mahmud, "the praiseworthy station" that Allah has promised him in the Quran.

The Full Text

Transliteration:
Allāhumma rabba hādhihi'd-daʿwati't-tāmmah, wa'ṣ-ṣalāti'l-qā'imah, āti Muḥammadan al-wasīlata wa'l-faḍīlah, wab'athhu maqāman maḥmūdan alladhī waʿadtah.

Meaning:
"O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer to be established, grant Muhammad the wasilah and virtue, and raise him to the praiseworthy station that You have promised him."

The Great Reward

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever says after hearing the call to prayer: 'O Allah, Lord of this perfect call…' — my intercession will be permitted for him on the Day of Judgement." (Bukhari 614, narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah)

This intercession (shafa'ah) is one of the greatest favours a believer can hope for on the Day of Judgement, when everyone will need the Prophet's ﷺ intercession before Allah.

What Do 'Wasilah' and 'Fadhilah' Mean?

The Prophet ﷺ himself explained:

"The wasilah is a station in Paradise befitting only one servant of Allah, and I hope that I will be that servant. So whoever asks Allah to grant me the wasilah, my intercession will be permitted for him." (Muslim 384, narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr)

Al-wasilah is a unique rank in Paradise reserved for one servant — and the Prophet ﷺ hopes to be that servant. Al-fadhilah is the general rank of virtue above all others. Al-maqam al-mahmud is the praiseworthy station of universal intercession promised in Surah al-Isra (17:79).

Additional Sunnah Duas Around the Adhan

1. Repeating what the Muezzin says

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you hear the call to prayer, say the same as what the muezzin says" (Bukhari 611). The listener repeats each phrase — with two exceptions: when the muezzin says "Hayya 'ala'ṣ-ṣalāh" ("Come to prayer") and "Hayya 'ala'l-falāḥ" ("Come to success"), the listener responds with "La ḥawla wa la quwwata illa billāh" ("There is no power or strength except with Allah") — Muslim 385.

2. Sending Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ

After the muezzin finishes and before the "wasilah" dua, it is Sunnah to send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, as he said: "When you hear the caller, repeat after him, then send blessings on me, for whoever sends one blessing on me, Allah sends ten upon him" (Muslim 384).

3. The Special Testimony (extra reward)

Some scholars recommend a beautiful additional dua after the shahada portion of the adhan, from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas:

"I too bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad as my Messenger, and with Islam as my religion." (Muslim 386) — "whoever says this after the adhan, his sins will be forgiven."

4. The Time Between Adhan and Iqamah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dua between the adhan and iqamah is not rejected — so make dua" (Abu Dawud 521, Tirmidhi 3595, sahih). This is one of the golden times for personal supplication.

When to Say the Dua

  1. The muezzin completes the adhan.
  2. The listener has finished repeating after the muezzin.
  3. The listener sends salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.
  4. The listener recites "Allāhumma rabba hādhihi'd-daʿwati't-tāmma…"
  5. Then the listener may make personal du'a until the iqamah is called.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recite the dua after every adhan, including on the phone or radio?

The dua is prescribed after hearing the actual adhan called for a specific prayer. Scholars differ on whether replying to a broadcast or recorded adhan carries the same reward — the majority view is that the responses and dua are Sunnah when hearing the real adhan being called for prayer, while responding to a recording is a good general act of remembrance but not the specific Sunnah act.

What is the "maqam mahmud"?

It is the praiseworthy station promised to the Prophet ﷺ in Surah al-Isra (17:79). Classical commentators explain it as the station of Great Intercession (ash-shafa'ah al-'uzma) on the Day of Judgement, when all people — even the great prophets — will turn to Muhammad ﷺ to intercede for the beginning of the reckoning.

Do I recite this dua after Iqamah as well?

The narrations specify saying it after hearing the adhan. The iqamah is a shorter call and, according to the majority, receives the same responses (repeating after the caller), but the specific "wasilah" dua is prescribed after the adhan, not after the iqamah.

Is it OK to say the dua silently in a noisy place?

Yes — the dua is a personal supplication and may be said silently. What matters is presence of heart, not volume of voice.

Etymology & origin

The dua text opens with "Allahumma rabba hadhihi'd-da'wati't-tamma" — "O Allah, Lord of this perfect call". "Da'wa" (call, invitation) refers here to the Adhan itself, and "tamma" (perfect, complete) alludes to the Quranic phrase "kalimat rabbik at-tammah" (the perfect word of your Lord). "Salat qa'imah" — "the prayer to be established" — refers to the imminent congregational prayer.
