What is Ihsan?

Ihsan is the crown of the Islamic religion — the level at which the servant's worship becomes beautiful because his heart is fully aware of the presence of Allah. It is defined in the most famous hadith of Islam, the Hadith of Jibril, in the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ own words: "That you worship Allah as if you see Him; for if you do not see Him, He surely sees you" (Bukhari 50, Muslim 8).

The Three Levels of the Religion

The same hadith of Jibril arranges the whole religion in three ascending levels:

• Islam — the outward practice: the five pillars.
• Iman — the inward belief: the six articles of faith.
• Ihsan — the spiritual excellence that lifts both islam and iman into the beauty of consciousness of Allah.

These are not three separate religions but three depths of one religion. A person may pray but not truly believe (islam without iman), or believe truly but pray heedlessly (iman without ihsan). Ihsan brings body, heart and awareness together.

Ihsan in Worship

To worship Allah with ihsan is to pray, fast, give and remember Him as if you saw Him — with the same beauty, attention and reverence you would have if He were visible. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has written ihsan upon everything. If you kill, kill with excellence; if you slaughter, slaughter with excellence — let one of you sharpen his blade and give ease to the animal" (Muslim 1955). Ihsan enters every act.

Ihsan Toward People and Creation

The word "ihsan" also means excellence and kindness in dealings. Allah says: "Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct (ihsan) and giving to relatives..." (Quran 16:90). It includes:

• Ihsan to parents — Allah pairs the command to worship Him alone with the command of ihsan to parents (Quran 17:23).
• Ihsan to relatives, orphans, the poor, neighbours, and travellers (Quran 4:36).
• Ihsan to animals — mercy in their treatment.
• Ihsan in speech, in work, in giving — every corner of daily life.

How do I develop ihsan?

By continuous remembrance (dhikr), reflecting on Allah's names and signs, praying with attention, and being just and generous with others. Ihsan grows the more the heart is awakened to the fact of Allah — not as a theory, but as a felt presence. The scholars called this muraqabah: continuous watchfulness of the heart before Allah.

What is the difference between ihsan and iman?

Iman is what you believe; ihsan is how beautifully you believe and act on it. Iman answers "what is true?"; ihsan answers "how am I standing before what is true?" Iman is the light; ihsan is the servant seeing by that light.
