Beliefs (Aqeedah)
Jannah
Paradise — the eternal abode of bliss prepared for the believers in the Hereafter, containing rewards no eye has seen nor ear heard.
What is Jannah?
Jannah is Paradise — the eternal abode of bliss prepared by God for the believers in the Hereafter. It is a realm of perfect, unending joy: gardens beneath which rivers flow, free of all pain, fear, and sorrow. Belief in Jannah is part of belief in the Last Day, one of the six pillars of faith. It is the ultimate goal and reward of a life of faith and righteousness.
What is Jannah Like?
The Quran and Sunnah describe Paradise in vivid terms, while affirming that its full reality is beyond imagination. The Prophet ﷺ relayed God's words: "I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived" (Bukhari 3244). Its delights include:
- Gardens with flowing rivers of water, milk, honey, and wine without intoxication
- Mansions, shade, and fruits ever within reach
- Pure companions and reunion with righteous loved ones
- Freedom from death, illness, ageing, and grief
- The greatest delight of all — seeing the Face of God
Jannah in the Quran
- "Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally." (9:72)
- "No soul knows what comfort of the eyes has been hidden for them as a reward for what they used to do." (32:17)
- "Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is that of the heavens and earth." (57:21)
The Levels of Paradise
Paradise has many levels, the highest being al-Firdaws, above which is the Throne of the Most Merciful. The Prophet ﷺ taught: "When you ask Allah, ask Him for al-Firdaws" (Bukhari 2790). The people of Paradise are ranked according to their faith and deeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does one enter Jannah?
Through the mercy of God, grasped by sincere faith (Tawhid) and righteous deeds. The Prophet ﷺ said no one enters Paradise by deeds alone, but by Allah's mercy (Bukhari 5673) — deeds are the means God has made for attaining that mercy.
Is Jannah eternal?
Yes. Its people abide there forever, never to die or be expelled, in joy that never fades.
Etymology & origin
Jannah (الجنة) comes from the root J-N-N (ج-ن-ن), meaning "to cover," "to conceal," or "to hide". The same root gives janin (foetus, hidden in the womb), junnah (shield), and jinn (hidden beings). A jannah is literally a garden whose dense trees conceal the ground. Paradise is called Jannah because of its lush, shaded gardens — and because its true reality is hidden from the eyes in this world.
