What is Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah?

Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah — the Oneness of Worship — is the belief that Allah alone deserves to be worshipped. Every prayer, every act of hope and fear, every sacrifice and every supplication belongs to Him alone. It is the meaning of the shahada — "la ilaha illa Allah", "there is no god (worthy of worship) except Allah" — and it is the pivot upon which the whole of Islam turns.

The Message of Every Prophet

Allah says: "And We sent no messenger before you [O Muhammad] except that We revealed to him: 'There is no god except Me, so worship Me'" (Quran 21:25). And: "And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying]: 'Worship Allah and avoid taghut'" (Quran 16:36). From Adam to Muhammad ﷺ, the substance of prophecy did not change: the call to worship Allah alone.

Where the Pagans Failed

The Meccan pagans acknowledged Allah as the Creator (tawhid al-rububiyyah) but rejected the call to worship Him alone. They defended their idols with the excuse: "We worship them only that they may bring us nearer to Allah" (Quran 39:3). This is why the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came: not to teach that God exists — most of his listeners already believed that — but to establish that only Allah is worshipped. Directing any worship to other than Allah is shirk, the sin the Quran calls the greatest injustice (Quran 31:13).

Kinds of Worship That Belong to Allah Alone

Every act that expresses ultimate reverence, love, hope, fear, and dependence is a form of worship, and belongs to Allah alone:

• Du'a — supplication. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Du'a is worship" (Abu Dawud 1479).
• Prostration and prayer.
• Sacrifice — "Say: my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds" (Quran 6:162).
• Fear (khawf) and hope (raja) in the ultimate sense.
• Love (mahabbah) that overrules all other loves.
• Reliance (tawakkul).
• Oath (yamin) — swearing by Allah alone.

The Fruit: La ilaha illa Allah

The shahada is not a slogan; it is a summary of tawhid al-uluhiyyah. Its two parts — la ilaha ("no god") and illa Allah ("except Allah") — are a denial and an affirmation. The believer denies all false objects of worship in his heart and life, and affirms Allah as the sole object of worship. When both are lived, faith is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does uluhiyyah replace rububiyyah?

No. The three categories work together. Uluhiyyah is the natural conclusion of rububiyyah: because Allah alone creates and sustains, He alone is worshipped. And Uluhiyyah is grounded in a right understanding of His names and attributes. All three form the classical Sunni account of tawhid.

Is loving a person a form of shirk?

No. Islam permits the natural love of family, teachers, and companions. What is forbidden is a love that displaces or equals the love of Allah, or that makes the beloved a rival to Allah in reverence or obedience. The Quran says: "But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah" (Quran 2:165). All lesser loves are folded into that greatest love.
