Prophets
Adam
Ādam
The first human and first prophet, created by Allah from clay. Father of mankind, taught the names of all things, and the first to be honored by the angels' prostration.
Who is Adam?
Adam is the first human being and the first prophet in Islam, the father of all humanity. God created him with His own hands from clay, breathed into him of His spirit, taught him the names of all things, and commanded the angels to prostrate to him in honour. Adam holds a unique place as the origin of the human race and the beginning of prophethood.
The Creation and Honour of Adam
The Quran narrates that God announced to the angels: "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority (khalifah)" (2:30). God taught Adam the names of all things, demonstrating his unique capacity for knowledge, and ordered the angels to prostrate before him; all did except Iblis (Satan), who refused out of arrogance and was cast out.
Adam, Hawwa, and the Garden
Adam and his wife Hawwa (Eve) dwelt in the Garden, permitted everything but one tree. Deceived by Satan, they ate from it and were sent down to earth. Crucially, unlike other traditions, Islam teaches that Adam repented and was forgiven — there is no concept of inherited sin: "Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance" (2:37).
Adam in the Quran
- "And He taught Adam the names — all of them." (2:31)
- "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise." (2:35)
- "Indeed, the example of Isa with Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust." (3:59)
Lessons from the Story of Adam
The story teaches the honour and responsibility of being human, the danger of arrogance (the sin of Iblis), the reality of repentance and God's mercy, and that human beings are God's stewards on earth, accountable for their choices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Islam teach original sin?
No. Islam teaches that Adam's mistake was his own, that he repented and was forgiven, and that every child is born in a pure natural state (fitrah), free of inherited sin.
Was Adam a prophet?
Yes. Adam is regarded as the first prophet, receiving revelation and guidance from God for himself and his descendants.
Etymology & origin
Adam (آدم) is the name of the first human and first prophet. Its derivation is discussed: many link it to adim al-ard (the surface or skin of the earth), since he was created from earth; others to udmah (a brownish or wheat-coloured complexion). The name signals his earthly origin — fashioned by God from clay and given life by His spirit.
