Names of Allah

Al-Muhsi

Al-Muḥṣī

المحصي

The Accounter — who has counted everything precisely, omitting nothing.

What does Al-Muhsi mean?

Al-Muhsi is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Reckoner," "The One who counts and records all". It affirms that Allah's knowledge encompasses the exact number and detail of everything in existence — every star, raindrop, leaf, and grain of sand, and every deed, word, and intention of every creature. Nothing, however vast or however small, escapes His precise reckoning.

The Meaning in Depth

Where human knowledge can only estimate, Al-Muhsi knows with perfect precision. He has counted and recorded all things — the number of breaths in every life, the deeds of every soul, the atoms of creation. On the Day of Judgement, this recording is laid open: "...they will say: O woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?" (18:49). Nothing is forgotten or miscounted with the Reckoner.

Al-Muhsi in the Quran

  • "...Allah has enumerated them (ahsahum) and counted them a [full] counting." (19:94)
  • "And We have enumerated all things in a clear register." (36:12)
  • "...the Book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it." (18:49)

Living by This Name

Al-Muhsi instils watchfulness and accountability: knowing that every deed, word, and even thought is precisely counted and recorded, the believer guards their actions and intentions. It also brings comfort and justice — no good deed is overlooked, no act of patience uncounted, no wrong against you forgotten. The believer is encouraged to take account of their own deeds (muhasabah) before the Day when Al-Muhsi reveals the perfect record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Al-Muhsi count even our thoughts and intentions?

Yes. Allah's reckoning encompasses everything — outward deeds, words, and the secrets of the heart. The Quran says the record leaves out nothing small or great (18:49). This is why the believer purifies their intentions, knowing the Reckoner accounts for all.

How is Al-Muhsi a source of comfort?

Because nothing good is ever lost. Every prayer, charity, moment of patience, and silent struggle is precisely counted by Al-Muhsi and will be fully rewarded. Likewise, every wrong is recorded for perfect justice — a deep comfort for the oppressed.

Etymology & origin

Al-Muhsi (المحصي) is from the root Ḥ-Ṣ-Y (ح-ص-ي), meaning "to count, enumerate, record, and encompass by number". From it comes ihsa (precise counting). Al-Muhsi is the Counter, the Reckoner: the One who knows the exact number and detail of all things — every creature, every deed, every breath — encompassing all in His knowledge.
