Names of Allah
Al-Mu'min
The Granter of Security — who fulfills His promises and grants safety to those who seek refuge in Him.
What does Al-Mu'min mean?
Al-Mu'min is one of the 99 Names of Allah, mentioned in Surah al-Hashr (59:23). It carries two meanings: "The Granter of Security" — the One who gives safety and tranquillity to His creation and will secure the believers from fear on the Day of Judgement; and "The Affirmer of Truth" — the One who confirms His messengers with miracles and verifies the truthfulness of those who believe in Him.
The Meaning in Depth
From the same root as faith (iman) and safety (amn), this name reveals that all true security comes from Allah. He is the source of inner peace for the believing heart and the guarantor of safety for those who turn to Him. He also "affirms" — He testified to His own oneness, confirmed His prophets with clear signs, and will affirm the faith of His servants by admitting them to safety in the Hereafter.
Al-Mu'min in the Quran
- "He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Source of Peace, the Granter of Security (Al-Mu'min), the Overseer..." (59:23)
- "Those who believed and did not mix their belief with injustice — those will have security, and they are rightly guided." (6:82)
Living by This Name
Al-Mu'min directs the believer to seek true security in God alone — security of the heart through faith, and security in both worlds through obedience. It frees one from being ruled by fear, for the ultimate safety is in His hands. It also calls the believer to be a source of security and trustworthiness to others; the Prophet ﷺ said, "The believer (mu'min) is the one whom people trust with their lives and wealth" (Ibn Majah 3934).
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Al-Mu'min share its root with "believer"?
Both come from the root meaning faith and security. The believer (mu'min) is one who has faith and gives others safety from harm; Allah is Al-Mu'min as the ultimate source of faith's security and the One who affirms the truth.
How does Al-Mu'min give security?
He grants inner tranquillity to the faithful heart, protects those who rely on Him, keeps His promises, and will secure the believers from the terror of the Day of Judgement, admitting them to lasting peace.
Etymology & origin
Al-Mu'min (المؤمن) is from the root A-M-N (أ-م-ن), the same root as iman (faith) and amn (security, safety). The active participle has two senses here: the One who grants security (amn) to His creation, and the One who confirms and affirms the truth — confirming His messengers with signs and confirming the faith of the believers.
