Names of Allah
As-Sami'
As-Samīʿ
The All-Hearing — who hears every sound, secret and prayer no matter how faint or distant.
What is As-Sami?
As-Sami declares Allah as the All-Hearing — perfectly hearing every sound that exists, has existed, or will exist, no matter how faint, distant, hidden, or imagined. This includes spoken words, whispered prayers, silent thoughts (which are also a form of "inner speech"), and the rhythms of the universe itself. Allah's hearing is not localized to ears nor limited by physics. He hears all of His creation simultaneously, distinguishing each voice, each language, each meaning, each intention behind it — without confusion, without effort, without missing a single nuance.
As-Sami in the Quran
The name As-Sami appears over 45 times in the Quran, often paired with Al-Aleem (the All-Knowing) or Al-Basir (the All-Seeing):
- With Al-Aleem: "And Allah is Hearing and Knowing." (2:181)
- With Al-Basir: "Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing." (4:58)
- Powerful affirmation: "And Allah hears your conversation." (58:1)
The most touching example is the opening of Surah Al-Mujadilah:
"Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who pleaded with you concerning her husband and complained to Allah, and Allah hears your dialogue. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing." (58:1)
This verse refers to Khawla bint Tha'labah (RA), who came to the Prophet ﷺ complaining about her husband. Aisha (RA) said she could barely hear Khawla's soft voice in the corner of the room, yet Allah heard her plea from above the seven heavens.
The Comprehensive Nature of As-Sami's Hearing
Classical scholars elucidated that Allah's hearing encompasses:
- Audible sound — spoken words, whispered prayers, even the sound of grass growing.
- Inaudible thoughts — every silent mental "conversation," every unspoken hope or fear.
- Multiple sources simultaneously — every Muslim's du'a worldwide is heard distinctly.
- All languages — Allah hears Arabic, Turkish, French, Wolof, Indonesian, and every dialect equally.
- Beyond physical sound — He hears the longing of broken hearts, the cries of the unspoken.
As-Sami in the Hadith
- "Verily, Allah hears the praise of those who praise Him; He says: 'My slave has praised Me' — when one recites 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is due to Allah)." (Sahih hadith qudsi)
- The Prophet ﷺ comforted his companions during the journey to Tabuk when they were too far from him to hear: "O people! Lower your voices, for you are not calling upon someone deaf or absent — rather, you are calling upon One who Hears and is Near." (Bukhari 6384, Muslim 2704)
- The famous narration of Khawla (RA): "Allah is the One who hears all things. Truly, I came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained of my husband. I was in a corner of the room, and Aisha could barely hear me, yet Allah revealed: 'Allah has heard the speech of she who pleaded with you...'" (Bukhari, Sahihah)
Theological Significance
Belief in As-Sami brings powerful transformations:
- Confidence in du'a — every word, even unspoken thought, reaches Him.
- Comfort in loneliness — there is no aloneness; Allah hears the cries of those forsaken by all others.
- Restraint in speech — knowing Allah hears stops gossip, lies, and harmful words.
- Closeness to Allah — He is not distant; He is "closer than the jugular vein" (50:16).
- Hope for the persecuted — every oppressor speaks; Allah hears.
How to Invoke As-Sami in Du'a
- The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allahumma innaka anta as-Samīʿ al-ʿAlīm, anta Mawlānā, fa-anta khayru an-nāṣirīn" — O Allah, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing; You are our Protector, the Best of Helpers.
- "Ya Samīʿ, isma'dua'ī wa istajib lī" — O All-Hearing, hear my du'a and answer me.
- When in trouble: "Ya Allāh, ya Samīʿ, ya Mujīb" — O Allah, the All-Hearing, the Answering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Allah hear non-Muslims when they pray?
Yes — As-Sami hears every prayer regardless of who utters it. Whether He responds to a particular prayer depends on His wisdom, but His hearing is universal. The Quran says: "And when My servants ask you about Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the supplication of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." (2:186)
How does Allah hear all prayers simultaneously?
His hearing is not constrained by time, space, or physics — concepts that limit our hearing. He is beyond the laws of His creation. Just as He created the universe in 6 "days" (using a concept of time that is His own, not ours), He hears all sounds in a manner beyond our comprehension.
If I think a du'a silently, will Allah hear it?
Absolutely. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah does not look at your appearances or wealth; rather, He looks at your hearts and your deeds." (Muslim 2564). What is in our hearts — including unspoken supplication — is fully audible to As-Sami.
Etymology & origin
As-Sami (السميع) derives from the Arabic root S-M-ʿ (س-م-ع), meaning "to hear" or "to listen." The same root produces samʿ (hearing as a faculty), sāmiʿ (one who hears), samīʿ (one who hears intensely), and istimāʿ (act of listening). The form fa'īl (As-Samīʿ) is the intensive form, indicating perfect, comprehensive, and active hearing — not just receiving sound but understanding and responding. Linguistically, "samīʿ" implies more than passive perception; it includes attention, comprehension, and often acceptance/response. When Allah is called As-Samīʿ, it means He not only "hears" in our limited sense, but receives every sound — whether spoken or unspoken — with full understanding and the power to respond.
