Names of Allah
Al-Mani'
Al-Māniʿ
The Preventer — who withholds what He wills as a test or protection for His servants.
What does Al-Mani mean?
Al-Mani is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Withholder," "The Protector and Defender". It carries two linked senses: Allah withholds and prevents what He wills — denying or delaying by His wisdom; and He protects, shields, and defends His creation, warding off harm from whom He wills. What He withholds, none can give; what He grants, none can withhold.
The Meaning in Depth
Al-Mani is the counterpart of names of giving like Al-Wahhab and Ar-Razzaq. His withholding is never miserliness or weakness; it is wisdom and often mercy in disguise. He may withhold a desire because it would harm, delay a gift to a better time, or prevent an enemy's plot. The Prophet ﷺ would say after every prayer: "O Allah, none can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold" (Bukhari 844) — affirming that all withholding and giving are His alone.
Al-Mani in the Quran (related meaning)
- "Whatever mercy Allah grants to people — none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds — none can grant it thereafter." (35:2)
This verse expresses the meaning of Al-Mani directly: His giving and His withholding are absolute and beyond any creature's power.
Living by This Name
Al-Mani brings contentment with what is given and withheld alike: when a prayer is delayed or a desire denied, the believer trusts that the Withholder, in His wisdom, has prevented something for their good. It also brings security through His protection — He is the Defender who shields from unseen harms. The believer asks Al-Mani both to grant what is good and to withhold what is harmful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Al-Mani a name of stinginess?
No. His withholding is wisdom, not miserliness, and often a mercy: He may withhold what would harm, delay a gift to a better moment, or protect from an enemy. Al-Mani also means the Protector who defends His creation. Both senses reflect care, not deprivation.
How do Al-Mani and the names of giving relate?
They are complementary: Al-Wahhab and Ar-Razzaq give, Al-Mani withholds — both by perfect wisdom. As the Prophet ﷺ taught, none can withhold what Allah gives, and none can give what He withholds, so the heart relies on Him alone.
Etymology & origin
Al-Mani (المانع) is from the root M-N-ʿ (م-ن-ع), meaning "to prevent, withhold, protect, and defend". From it come manʿ (prevention) and manaʿah (protection, strength). Al-Mani is the Withholder and Protector: the One who withholds what He wills by His wisdom, and who prevents and shields His creation from harm.
